Conservative, Moderate, Progressive, or Liberal

I grew up in the very conservative South. I am not a conservative. As a moderate, I believe there are issues that are too complex for partisan or party politics. I dislike terms like “conservative”, “liberal”, “progressive”, Democrat, Republican, and Libertarian. I am not a socialist or a fascist. I am not afraid to express my views. I vote for the candidates that I feel have what it takes to lead our country based on character, honesty, and views. I understand that is not always possible.

I am liberal because I am strong on civic liberties. Civil liberties are basic rights. The Declaration of Independence declared we are created equal with the unalienable (human) rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These rights are expressed as (1) civil rights, political rights, and human rights. These rights protect an individual from infringement by the government, social organizations, and individuals. These rights give us the right to participate in society and the state without discrimination and repression.

The history of the United States is filled with examples of how our country struggles with the civil liberties our forefathers fought to establish. The treatment of Native Americans, slaves, indentured servants, and immigrants are stains on views of liberty. The role of women, the influence of religion, and the economic views and experiences of our people make us question who we are. We all have views on freedom and yet, we lack the will to look at what it means to be free and make the changes necessary for all to enjoy, life, and pursuit of happiness.
