⛰️ Who Can Ascend the Hill of the Lord?

Daily Office Readings: Psalm 24; Zechariah 9:9–12; 1 Timothy 6:12–16

✍️ When the Song Feels Hard to Sing

“Rejoice and shout aloud…”

“Fight the good fight…”

“God…who gives life to all things.”

These words from today’s readings call us to sing, to declare, and to honor God with thanksgiving. They remind us that life itself is a gift—something to be unwrapped each day.

And yet… there are days I don’t feel like it.

There are days when problems and stress feel overwhelming. Days when the weight of life—our own decisions and the decisions of others—presses in on us. Days when rejoicing feels distant and the song catches in our throat.

I am reminded that the human condition involves suffering in its many forms. We live in a broken world. But even in the midst of that brokenness, we are called—to love God with all that we are, and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

So the question rises from Psalm 24:

“Who can ascend the hill of the Lord?”

📖 The Call of the Scriptures

Psalm 24 answers the question:

“Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, who do not lift up their soul to falsehood or swear deceitfully.”

Zechariah calls us to rejoice:

“Rejoice greatly… shout aloud… your king is coming to you.”

And in 1 Timothy we are urged:

“Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called.”

Together, these readings paint a picture of a life that rejoices, endures, and seeks after God.

But they also raise a deeper question:

What does it really mean to have clean hands and a pure heart?

🕊️ Clean Hands: The Life We Live

Clean hands speak to our actions—how we live in the world.

It does not mean perfection. It means a life that is turning away from harm, choosing truth over falsehood, and making things right when we fall short.

Clean hands are not about never getting dirty…

They are about refusing to stay there.

❤️ A Pure Heart: The Life Within

A pure heart speaks to our inner life—our motives, our desires, and who we are becoming.

It is not about being flawless, but about being undivided. It is about sincerity, honesty, and a growing capacity to love—God, others, and even ourselves.

A pure heart is not perfect…

It is honest.

🔥 Fighting the Good Fight on Hard Days

The call to “fight the good fight” assumes something important: life is not easy.

The fight is not about winning arguments or proving ourselves right. It is the daily, often quiet struggle to:

  • Keep loving when it is difficult
  • Keep trusting when life feels uncertain
  • Keep choosing truth over illusion
  • Keep showing up—even when we don’t feel like it

Some days, worship looks like joyful praise.

Other days, it looks like simply saying,
“God, I’m here.”

🌿 So… Who Can Ascend?

Not those who are perfect.

But those who are willing.

Willing to be honest.
Willing to turn back when they wander.
Willing to seek truth over falsehood.
Willing to keep climbing, even on weary days.

We ascend the hill of the Lord not because we have achieved purity…

But because we are being formed into it.

🌅 A Curious Pilgrim Reflection

Life is a gift, given fresh each morning.

Some days we unwrap it with joy.
Other days, with trembling hands.

But always, it is still a gift.

And the One who gives life to all things walks with us—through joy and sorrow, strength and weakness, clarity and confusion.

So we keep walking.

We keep climbing.

We keep trusting that even in our imperfect lives… we are being drawn upward.

🙏 Closing Prayer & Blessing

Lord of Life,
You who give breath to all things,

On the days when joy comes easily,
teach us to sing with gratitude.

On the days when the song feels far away,
receive our quiet presence as worship.

Cleanse our hands—not to make us perfect,
but to make us honest.

Purify our hearts—not to make us flawless,
but to make us whole.

Help us to fight the good fight—
with love, with faith, and with perseverance.

And when we stumble,
remind us that we are still climbing your hill.

Amen.
